A 3-seater dining garden bench typically has a seat depth of around 45 to 70cm, allowing you to sit upright and close to the table. A 3-seater lounge garden bench is considerably deeper and usually ranges between 70 and 100cm in total depth, depending on the cushions and the style of the design.
What is the ideal seat width for a bench?
On average, the ideal seat width is around 65cm per person. For a 3-seater dining bench, this quickly leads to a total length of about 200cm.
For a more generous and comfortable seat, as with lounge benches, 80cm or more per person is preferable. This gives more relaxation in the shoulders and arms and provides enough space to lean back or recline slightly.
How much space do you need behind a garden bench?
A garden bench with a backrest can, in principle, be placed directly against a wall, as you slide in from the front and do not need walking space behind the bench. This applies to both dining benches and lounge benches.
With a dining garden bench without a backrest it is different. You do not slide in from the front, but step onto it from the back or the side. In that case, you do need space behind the bench. Allow around 60 to 80cm of free space so you can stand up and walk away comfortably without it feeling cramped.
Which bench can stay outside all year round?
A garden bench can only remain outside all year round if it is made from weather-resistant materials. In practice, these are mainly teak, aluminium and high-quality wicker. These materials cope well with rain, temperature changes and UV light without deteriorating quickly.
Cushions are often the most vulnerable part. Even when the bench itself can stay outside, it is wise to store the cushions in a dry place during autumn and winter or during heavy rain showers.
