Can you leave an outdoor rug outside year-round?
Yes, outdoor rugs can be left outside throughout the year. They're made from polypropylene and/or a type of (recycled) polyester or plastic. These materials withstand various weather conditions well. However, during winter it may be wise to roll up your rug and store it to prevent unnecessary wear.
It’s also good to note that there are differences in quality. Cheaper outdoor rugs often offer less UV resistance and may fade faster. The material also tends to be less durable and more sensitive to friction, stains and mould. Investing in a high-quality outdoor rug ensures it stays looking beautiful for longer.
How do you clean an outdoor rug?
You can easily clean your outdoor rug with a garden hose. If it’s heavily soiled or affected by green algae, use a soft brush with mild soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and let it dry in the sun.
Avoid high-pressure washers or aggressive cleaning agents like bleach, as they can damage the rug.
What size outdoor rug do I need?
The ideal size depends on your space and how you plan to use the rug. Placing it under a lounge set? Make sure it’s at least as wide as the sofa and runs under the front legs. For a dining area, choose a rug that extends at least 65cm beyond the table on all sides so that chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out.
For example, with a 220cm long dining table, a 250x300cm rug is ideal. If you’d like to place chairs at the short ends of the table as well, a 250x350cm rug is recommended. For a 300cm table, opt for a 250x350cm or 250x400cm rug. For a 250cm long lounge sofa, a 200x300cm rug offers ample space for the front legs and a coffee table, possibly with an extra chair. For a 200x300cm corner sofa layout, a 250x350cm rug gives a well-balanced frame.
