FAQ 8-seater garden tables

Which garden tables can stay outside year-round?

Aluminium, cast iron, ceramic, and teak are materials that are highly resistant to sun and rain. Outdoor tables made from these materials can safely remain outdoors all year round. However, it is advisable to wipe down weather-resistant garden tables with a damp cloth after use to prevent dirt and stains from penetrating the surface. Additionally, bird droppings should be removed as soon as possible to prevent damage..

If you opt for a wooden garden table, it is recommended to cover it with a breathable furniture cover or store it away during the winter months. Moroever, wooden tables should be properly maintained at least once a year to ensure longevity. Without regular maintenance, the lifespan of your wooden garden table may be significantly shorter.

How long does an outdoor wooden table last?

The quality and lifespan of a wooden garden table largely depend on the type of wood used. Some wood species are far more durable than others. Spruce and pine are generally the least durable for outdoor furniture, with a lifespan of only 5 to 10 years.

Douglas wood is also commonly used for outdoor settings and lasts between 10 and 15 years. If you're looking for a more durable option, oak, bamboo, or iroko might be a better choice, with an average lifespan of 15 to 25 years. However, the most durable option is a teak garden table, which easily lasts over 25 years with proper care.

How should you maintain a garden table?

To keep your garden table in top condition, wipe down the tabletop with a damp cloth after each use. This prevents dirt and stains from absorbing into the surface. Additionally, bird droppings should be removed as soon as possible to avoid potential damage.

Beyond daily care, specific maintenance depends on the material. Ceramic and aluminium garden tables should be cleaned a few times per year with warm water and mild soap if they become dirty. Cast iron tables also benefit from occasional cleaning, and after about five years, the hardwood slats may need a fresh coat of paint.

Wooden garden tables require at least one deep clean per year. After cleaning, apply a shield and optionally a protector to safeguard the table from various weather conditions.

How should you treat a wooden garden table?

To keep your (teak) wooden outdoor table in optimal condition, it should be cleaned at least once a year. We recommend using a teak cleaner, which deeply cleans the wood fibers, preventing dirt from resurfacing later.

Next, you can treat the wooden table with a protector or oil in your preferred colour. For our teak garden furniture, we highly recommend our teak protector, as it is less greasy, absorbs faster, and retains colour up to four times longer than traditional oils.

Finally, we suggest applying a shield, such as our teak shield, which creates a protective layer on the wood. This prevents stains, dirt, and algae from penetrating the surface. Coffee, wine, and even mayonnaise will remain on top instead of leaving unsightly marks on the wood.

Our shield contains no colourants, making it perfect for aged garden tables, helping you maintain their beautiful weathered look..

What are the ideal dimensions for an 8-seater garden table?

For a rectangular or oval 8-seater garden table, the ideal length ranges between 240 and 300cm. Keep in mind that smaller tables may limit your choice of chairs, as wider chairs might not fit comfortably. To create extra space, you can place chairs at the head of the table for a more flexible seating arrangement.

For a round 8-seater outdoor table, we recommend a diameter of 160 or 180cm. This ensures ample legroom for all guests. If you prefer a square 8-seater garden table, the minimum size should be 160cm, though this may be less suitable for taller individuals. If you want to ensure sufficient legroom and allow chairs to be comfortably tucked in, then 200cm or more might be a better choice.

How much space do I need for an 8-seater outdoor table?

To ensure comfortable seating, we recommend leaving around 80cm of space around the table for easy access. If your garden table is next to a walkway or near a door, allow for at least 120cm of clearance for smooth movement.

The exact space required for a large 8-seater garden table depends on the table’s dimensions and shape. Oval and round tables generally take up less space on the terrace, but they offer slightly less legroom compared to rectangular or square tables.

Hence, we recommend the following minimum terrace dimensions:

Table shape Required space
Round 8-seater garden table 300x300cm
Square 8-seater garden table 325x325cm
Oval 8-seater garden table 400x250cm
Rectangular 8-seater garden table 400x250cm
