FAQ 6-seater garden sets
Which garden set can stay outside all year round?
In principle, all garden sets are weather-resistant and can remain outdoors year-round. However, some materials withstand the elements better than others. Aluminium outdoor sets, for example, are highly resistant to both sun and rain, but because they are lightweight, it is advisable to store or secure them during strong winds.
For wooden garden sets, durability depends on the type of wood. Spruce or pine require treatment to extend their lifespan and should ideally be stored indoors during winter. More durable hardwoods, such as teak, can remain outdoors year-round. However, we recommend covering them with a breathable garden set cover in winter to extend their lifespan.
Garden cushions should generally be stored when not in use. Even the most luxurious cushions will not last as long if left outside all year. There is no such thing as 100% weatherproof cushions. At &MOSS, we sell cushions made from Sunbrella fabrics, one of the best outdoor textile brands available. These cushions can withstand occasional rain showers and resist fading in the sun. However, to keep them in top condition for as long as possible, we recommend storing them indoors when rain is expected.
How long does a wooden garden set last?
The lifespan of a wooden garden set depends on the type of wood and its durability rating. Durability class 5 is the least durable, with a lifespan of up to five years, and is more susceptible to fungi and bacteria. Therefore, most garden furniture is made from wood with a higher durability class (3 to 1).
Douglas wood falls into class 3 and lasts 10 to 15 years on average. Oak and Iroko are examples of wood types from class 2 lasting around 15 to 25 years on average. In class wood types have a lifespan of 25 year or more, such as teak wood, making it one of the best woods for garden sets.
Keep in mind that wood ages over time. Exposure to sun and rain causes wood to expand and contract, potentially leading to cracks and slight warping. This is a natural process that enhances the wood's character. Generally, the lower the durability class, the higher the chance of visible imperfections.
How should I maintain a garden set?
The best maintenance method depends on the material of your garden set. Wicker, rattan, and aluminium garden sets require little to no maintenance. Cleaning with a damp cloth and mild soap is usually sufficient. Cast iron garden sets are also easy to maintain. Regular cleaning is enough, but the paintwork may need touching up every five years.
Wooden garden sets require a little more care. We recommend deep cleaning at least once a year, followed by a protective treatment. For our teak collection, we advise using teak maintenance products to preserve its beauty for years to come.
How big should a 6-seater garden set be?
The ideal size depends on the shape of the table and the width of the chairs. For round garden sets for 6 we recommend a table with a diameter of 130 to 150cm. While for oval or organic shaped tables a length of 200 to 240cm is more advisable.
Rectangular 6-seater garden tables typically range from 200 to 260cm in length. Hence, a 200cm table offers less space than a 260cm one, so for smaller tables (<230cm), it’s often best to choose narrow chairs without armrests or place two chairs at the head of the table to seat six people comfortably.
How much space do I need for a 6-seater garden set?
The required space for a 6-seater garden set depends on the table shape, location, and size. If the table is near a walkway or door, leave at least 120cm of clearance for easy movement. Is the table placed against a wall or house? Then 80cm is sufficient to allow guests to sit and stand comfortably.
For a rectangular or oval 6-seater garden set, we recommend a minimum space of 250x350cm. If you prefer a round 6-seater garden set, opt for a terrace of at least 275x275cm. If you have more space, even better — it allows for a larger table or simply more freedom of movement.
